The gold and the lost have arrived.

There is now discord and fear.

Alone.

Before I knew it, Thursday night was already upon us, and I had forgotten to tell Aeria about the party James and his roommates were having. Aeria continued to keep her distance and spoke very little to anyone, let alone me. Maybe this party was something we both needed to distract ourselves from the things we wanted to ignore.

That night, I made sure to mention it. “I forgot to tell you earlier. James told me he and his friends were having a party tomorrow night. I think we should go.”

Aeria dropped her pen as she turned in her chair. Her eyes were wide with shock. “Seriously? You’re willingly telling me about a party?”

I rolled my eyes at her response. “Sadly, yes. I think we need to go and have some fun. I know you resent me for some things, but for now, let’s just put it all aside. Deal?”

Her eyes dropped back down to the binder in her lap. When her lips pinched and squished into her nose she finally nodded. “I’ll go, but only if Damon isn’t. Text him.”

I went to grab my phone, but hesitated. “Maybe I should email him. You heard what he said. If we keep in contact, it has to be in secret. I doubt that Lara chick can hack our school email.”

I hope.

A thought occurred to me as I sent the email to Damon. Opening a new email, I wrote to Jason, letting him know that we weren’t going to be members of the Ghost Hunter’s Club anymore because school this semester was already too overwhelming. I made sure to promise him that we would give Damon our necklaces. The last thing I wanted was for one of them to chase us down for those damn things.

“Are you still emailing him? It was just a simple question,” Aeria groaned.

“I already did. This is for Jason to let him know we won’t be a part of the club anymore. It’s easier just sending an email to him than to deal with an argument face-to-face,” I said with a hint of sarcasm.

She let out a laugh that sounded cold and distant. “Well, I guess killing two birds with one stone. Break up with the other boy now and be done with it.”

That took me by surprise. “What? Where did that come from?”

“Just a thought,” she said as she shrugged.

That kind of comment wasn’t something I was expecting from her. Aeria was adamant about me finding a man of my own. She always told me James was interested and she had pushed me into dating him. Misery loved company, I guess.

It didn’t take long for Damon to email me back, but it was odd. There were no letters, only symbols. They were familiar, too. They matched the symbols I had seen on the doorways when they were sealed.

I was officially confused. “Um, Aeria, can you take a look at this?”

She grunted but climbed down from her bed and walked over to look at my computer.
